Cold Wintry Weather In Scottsdale

Last week, Avondale and the rest of the Phoenix area got to experience it’s first taste of wintry weather. The weather was brought to us by a low pressure system which brought a cold front bringing along strong winds and rain to the Valley as well as snow to other parts of the state. Last Thursday, Valley residents woke up to 37 degree temperatures making that morning commute to work pretty chilly.
Colder temperatures typically mean it’s time to add extra blankets and turn your heaters or space heaters on since many of us here in Avondale and Goodyear aren’t used to the cooler temps we’ve been seeing recently. Here are some safety tips to consider when it comes to your heaters.
- Test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly.
- Switch out the batteries on your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Never leave a space heater unattended. Make sure it is turned off and unplugged before leaving your home.
- Make sure there is at least a 3 foot safe space around your space heater to prevent anything from catching on fire.
- If you have a fireplace, make sure your fireplace and chimney are properly cleaned to prevent soot buildup from catching on fire.
- Do not leave a fire in your fireplace unattended. Have a fireplace screen in front to prevent any sparks from jumping out.
