When you think of Thanksgiving, what’s the first thing that crosses your mind? Turkey? We think so too! Each year, families gather around the table with turkey and other delicious foods to celebrate a day of thanks with cherished loved ones. Thanksgiving is just a few short days away which means it’s a great time to review safety when it comes to deep frying a turkey. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “deep fryer fires cause an average of 5 deaths, 60 injuries and more than $15 million in property damage each year” (nfpa.org). Here are some tips to remember when it comes to frying a turkey for the dinner table.
Safety Tips
- Only use a turkey fryer outdoors and make sure it is a safe distance away from your home as well as other building structures and flammable items such as trees and shrubbery.
- Do not allow children or pets near the fryer.
- Never leave the fryer unattended.
- Do not overfill the fryer with oil.
- Use heat resistant gloves when handling the fryer to avoid any burns.
- Make sure the turkey is completely thawed out. Putting a frozen turkey in hot oil cam cause oil to spillover and could potentially start a fire.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
