September 22nd marks the first day of fall and you know what that means! It’s time to change it up a little and give your home a nice and cozy autumn ambiance to welcome the changing season. Candles are a hit as they can add a nice decorative touch to your living space as well as adding a nice autumn scent to make for a calming atmosphere. Candles can add a nice touch to your space but using them requires attention as well as knowledge of the potential dangers that they can pose.

Here are some tips SERVPRO of Scottsdale has put together for you to consider when using candles in your home.

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended. Always make sure you are in the same room. If you must leave a room, it’s better to be safe than sorry by putting out the flame.
  • Place the candle on a secure surface so that it the candle won’t easily topple over or be knocked down.
  • Situate the candle away from any flammable objects such as curtains, paper or any flammable liquids.
  • Watch your children and pets when a candle is being used to prevent it from being knocked over.
  • Do not touch or move a candle when it is lit as the candle itself can be hot to the touch causing you to accidentally drop.
  • Always know where your fire extinguishers are located and know how to use it. You also want to make sure that you test your smoke alarms regularly to ensure that they are working properly.
